Is this the worst song ever?

As with a lot of things, I originally posted this on iafrica.com. But again, this is totally worth the repost.

If you’ve been anywhere on the Internet lately, you’ve probably come across the train wreck that is Rebecca Black’s debut single Friday. The Twitterverse has gone completely nuts over the 13-year-old’s song – which has also notched up over eight million views on YouTube.

Our news editor reckons it makes him think of How I Met Your Mother‘s Robin Sparkles. And I live in hope that in a couple weeks they’ll tell us it was all a big prank, haha we got you and my faith in humanity would be restored.

Time Magazine waded into it, calling the song “a whole new level of bad”. And to be fair, with lyrics like, “Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday/Today is Friday, Friday,” she sings, before massacring the English language (“We we we so excited”) and moving onto the lyrical gem “Tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes afterwards” a bit later.”

What the very young Miss Black and her “record label” (I use this term very loosely) were hoping to achieve is very unclear. The Ark Music Factory – the guys behind the song and video – seem to be churning out various pre-teen acts and a similarly atrocious videos – but this one’s gone viral. Bizarrely.

If she wants to be the next Justin Bieber, one word of advice. Cover versions. Please. And lay off the autotune, the sketchy older rapper and the awful, awful songwriting.

Anyway, watch it here. You’ve been warned.
